Fabric Care FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Fabric Care
Welcome to our fabric care guide! Here you'll find answers to common questions about caring for your beautiful quilting and sewing fabrics.
Should I pre-wash my fabric before using it?
Yes, we recommend pre-washing your fabric before starting your project. This removes any excess dye and allows the fabric to shrink before you cut and sew. Wash in cool water with a mild detergent and tumble dry on low heat or hang to dry.
What temperature should I use when washing my fabrics?
For most quilting cottons, use cool or warm water (30-40°C). Hot water can cause colours to fade and fabrics to shrink excessively. Always check the fabric content and any specific care instructions.
Can I use fabric softener on my quilting fabrics?
We don't recommend using fabric softener on quilting cottons as it can leave a residue that may affect the fabric's absorbency and make it harder to quilt through. If you want softer fabric, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead.
How should I dry my fabrics?
Tumble dry on low heat or hang to dry. Remove fabrics from the dryer while still slightly damp to reduce wrinkles. If you prefer crisp fabric for piecing, you can let them dry completely and then press with an iron.
What iron temperature should I use?
Most cotton fabrics can be pressed with a hot iron (cotton setting). Use steam for best results. Always test on a scrap piece first, especially with fabrics that have metallic prints or special finishes.
How do I prevent colours from bleeding?
Pre-washing helps remove excess dye. For fabrics with deep or vibrant colours (like reds, purples, and navy), you can soak them in a solution of cold water and white vinegar (1 cup vinegar per gallon of water) for 30 minutes before the first wash. Always wash dark and light fabrics separately.
How should I store my fabric?
Store fabrics in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Fold fabrics neatly or roll them to prevent permanent creases. Avoid storing in plastic bags for long periods as fabrics need to breathe - cotton storage bags or open shelving works best.
What if my fabric has wrinkles?
Press with a hot iron and steam. For stubborn wrinkles, lightly mist the fabric with water or use a spray starch alternative, then press. Always press on the wrong side of the fabric when possible to protect any special finishes.
How do I care for fabrics with metallic prints?
Fabrics with metallic elements (like our Spark collection) require gentle care. Wash in cool water on a gentle cycle, and press on the wrong side with a pressing cloth to protect the metallic finish. Avoid high heat which can damage metallic prints.
Can I use starch on my fabrics?
Yes! Many quilters use spray starch or starch alternatives to give fabric more body and make it easier to cut and piece accurately. Apply starch after pre-washing and drying, then press well. Remember that starched fabric will need to be washed again after your project is complete.
How often should I wash finished quilts or projects?
Wash quilts and fabric projects only when necessary. Frequent washing can cause wear over time. Spot clean when possible, and when washing is needed, use a gentle cycle with cool water and mild detergent. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat.
What detergent should I use?
Use a mild, dye-free detergent designed for delicate fabrics or colours. Avoid detergents with optical brighteners or harsh chemicals that can fade colours over time. Many quilters prefer fragrance-free options.
