Slow Stitch and Appliqué Dogwood Kit

I love these slow stitch and appliqué kits which combine mindfulness with sustainability.  This kit features the Dogwood flower and is suitable for both beginners and improvers.   The dogwood is small and delicate looking, it's actually quite tough but can symbolise purity, strength and affection.

Each kit uses the same pattern but has different fabrics which are sourced as new, vintage and reclaimed from English country brocantes, French flea markets and American & Australian vintage collectors.

When searching for vintage fabrics for the kits, Kylie from Wattle&Loop makes a point of trying to choose fabrics that may not be of much use to other sewers or crafters because of holes, stains, tears, old worn-out embroidery etc. She believes it is these ‘imperfections’ that add the magic, personality and story to each artwork. In her own work she always make a point of using these ‘features’ of the old fabrics to her advantage to help tell the story of the piece and does not try to hide them.

In fact, Wattle&Loop began while at a sewing retreat with friends where Kylie was gathering up all the tiny, (but lovely!), discarded scraps of fabrics. These ‘scraps’, along with old, but beautiful textile bits & pieces from both of her grandmothers' collections formed the first “Wattle&Loop” original collaged artworks.  Truly sustainable fabric art!

You now have a chance with your kit to make your own sustainable fabric art using the fabrics supplied which have already had a full life of their own with the marks, holes and traces of old embroidery to prove it! As you incorporate these fabrics into your artwork, you will be giving them a whole new life as a thing of beauty, rather than a bit of fabric disregarded for its imperfections. This is what makes Wattle&Loop Kits unique and special.

You are then able to add in your own 'special touches'.  Do you have any of your own special scraps of fabric that you could incorporate? Perhaps you have a box of old lace doilies or grandma’s old lace hankies that instead of sitting in a cupboard, could be incorporated into your special textile artwork to be admired and enjoyed once again?

Each Wattle&Loop Kit contains a similar, but different, selection of fabrics to every other kit. Once Kylie has used up a piece of vintage fabric, that’s it, she cannot simply buy more of the same. But, by using these special, limited quantity fabrics, you can be sure that your kit is 100% unique; as far from ‘mass produced’ as they come! What is also very important to both myself and Kylie at Wattle and Loop, is that by using these fabrics, instead of constantly buying brand new fabrics, we are reducing our footprint on the environment. You are making something stunning out of fabrics that may otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Take your time and enjoy the process of selecting your fabrics, cutting out your shapes and arranging them, and enjoy daydreaming about the life each fabric scrap may have had before it was put into your kit. This is what makes a Wattle&Loop Kit special. It is like no other in the world.
